Bruce Crane

Chief Legal Counsel
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection

October 2018, Governor Brown appointed Bruce as chief counsel at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Bruce began his career with CAL FIRE, then CDF, in 1979 as a seasonal firefighter. Bruce joined the Legal Office in 2000, at a time when the Department only had three attorneys. Bruce’s experience as a seasonal firefighter has been instrumental in his ability to understand and provide counsel on issues unique to the Department’s public safety and natural resources mission.  Bruce has guided and provided counsel to many of us in CAL FIRE throughout the years, and has been critical to successfully navigating the Department through occupational safety issues as well as counselling so many of us on personnel matters. The Department has evolved over the decades, and Bruce will now lead a program of 13 attorneys who are engaged in many complex program and policy issues.  I have the utmost confidence in Bruce’s leadership and expertise as he takes on this new assignment.
